Club News Homepage Introduction — 19 December 2021

Team Slaney take the Senior Cross Country title, led home by Enda Cloke in 2nd, David Mahon 3rd, Denis Whelan 8th, Seán Crotty 12th making up the scoring Team, with MJ Furlong 16th, John Foley 22nd, Padraig Coone 27th, Connell Cooper 33rd, Conor Hyland 34th, Colin Garry 42nd, Bobby Redmond 45th, Mick Quigley 48th, Fergus Murphy 57th, Alan Ronan 58th, Ger Murphy 59th.The club has struggled to get a team to the start line over the last number of years as the age profile of the Athletes in the club was getting higher. The long serving members from Slaney’s first Senior Cross Country title back in 2004 were Dave Barron, Jim Stafford, Kevin Murphy, Jason O’Connor, and Mark Wickham. This has been the first year that none of this winning team has not raced for the club in the senior xc – since 2004, one or two of them have always been on the line. As far as I can remember, the only athletes from Slaney who ran in 2004 and today are Ger Murphy and Bernie Miller. In the last few years we have been lucky to get some new young runners into the club, with Ger Forde winning 7 senior titles, but not having the team around him to win the teams. Ger has moved to KCH, but as one door closes a new group has come of age and now we can look forward to seeing the purple and gold at the top of the field again. The ladies team all ran well, but unfortunately no medals today, with Esther O’Leary first home for the club in 17th place, followed by Tracy Kavanagh in 20th, Orla Keogh in 21st , Greta Roberts Tyrrell in 22nd, and Bernie Miller in 23rd.Well done to all.Next up is the Master’s on the 7th January. Looking forward to seeing you all there.
