Well done to all 6 club members who ran well for the club last Sunday. Farmer took the title with the men’s team winning gold.

It was a cool dry day with an easterly breeze in Ballytrent near Kilrane last Sunday for the County Intermediate Cross Country Championships. The course was run over a 1 km lap on a dry elevated field overlooking the sea.

Mary Doyle was our sole representitive in the women’s race which started at 12 o’clock. With a small field there were team medals here for the taking if we could have secured gold had we had two more runners in the field. Your scribe would have run (jogged slowly!) to make up a team if we had had a third person to make up a team. Well done Mary.

We had five runners in the men’s race : Martin Monaghan, Mick Jordan, Brian Murphy, Mick Nolan and Ger Murphy. Farmer took off like a bullet at the gun and soon built up a significant lead which he held comfortably over the full eight laps to the finish. Mick Jordan was running in fourth place over the early laps but gradually wound it up and moved into third place over the last 2 laps to finish in bronze medal position. Good runs too from Brian, Mick N, and Ger to give a very solid team performance. It’s a pity we didn’t have another 3 runners so we could have won silver as well.

So let’s all, men and women, get some cross country training in between now and the seniors and masters…training in Kavanagh’s field on Sundays and the ground is nice and dry at the moment. And remember that a couple of months cross country will build up strength for road running in the Spring.
