The first leg of the Slaney Olympic Summer League Handicap was held on Friday evening May 7th on the Old Dublin road.  The weather was cold and windy but that did not deter 36 determined athletes facing the challenge of the first of 8 races which now comprises the annual Summer League.  It’s a series of races which is growing in popularity year by year as due to the Handicap nature of the event it caters for all abilities. Please note that its not always the first person to finish who wins the handicap, this is for the benefit of newcomers who may not have participated in handicap races todate.  Each runner is allocated a time depending on their own standard and when the handicaps are adjusted any runner can be in the frame depending on their own ability to beat their allocated times.

First home in the men was Kevin Murphy in a time of 10.14 with Jon Roban 11.14 followed by Stephen Tyrell 11.32, Edward White 11.38, Fergus Murphy 11.50, Mick Nolan 11.51.

First lady was Rita Boyle in 14.01, Mag Dunphy 15.19, Bernie Millar 15.29, Annis Kehoe 16.26, Deidre Kavanagh 16.37, Yvonne Howard 17.54.

A warm welcome to the new guys and all the ladies from Gorey which were brought along by Eleanor O’Sullivan fresh from her rowing marathon across the Irish Sea to Wales the previous weekend.  Thanks to all who took part both runners and helpers. Next race is a 3 mile run on May 28th again on the Old Dublin road, all are welcome.
