The Slaney Olympic A.C. road summer league continued at the Ballagh last Friday with a challenging 4 mile race. A slight break in the weather gave some respite to the 42 athletes who battled their way around a challenging hilly course.
An exciting men’s race saw the first 3 men within 23 secs of each other, first home was Gowran AC’s Mick Kelly in 21.49; followed in second by SBR’s Tommy Maclewain in 21.55; and third was SBR’s Paul Gibbons in 22.13. The first Slaney athlete home was Jason O’Connor in 5th position in 22.53.
The ladies race was won by Macamore A.C. athlete Lillian Lawless in a time of 29.05; followed in second position by Slaney’s Martina O’Sullivan in 29.32 and third position was the promising U18 athlete, Lauren Kinsella of Enniscorthy A.C. in a time of 30.15.
The race was followed by the warm hospitality of the Dempsey’s in the Sawdust Pub for refreshments and prize giving. The popular race series is growing in stature with athletes from other clubs regularly competing, as well as new people taking up running, enjoying the friendly atmosphere of the club that now has over 100 members.
